When an external auditor first requests a detailed walkthrough of the controls governing an agentic AI system that interacts with financial data, a critical distinction will emerge: it will reveal whether the AI implementation was built on genuine operational discipline or merely served as a superficial showcase. Throughout this year, I have observed the enterprise purchasing cycle for agentic AI unfold across industry conferences, finance leadership roundtables, vendor demos, and dialogues with internal audit teams determining their strategic stance. The dominant narrative I encounter within finance organizations regarding agentic AI focuses almost exclusively on productivity gains, with virtually no attention paid to audit readiness.
